Dr.h.c. Anthony G. He has successfully accomplished leading startup and business expansion challenges. He has established a steady record of meeting or exceeding goals, stimulating top-line growth and bottom-line profitability. He has founded and transformed 5 industries, medical device reprocessing, spine arthroplasty, nucleus arthroplasty, the small bone and joint market and total ankle arthroplasty. As a contributing member of executive teams, he has astute experience in developing and executing strategy; identifying and improving processes to reduce expenses and achieving business and financial growth targets. He is a ROI driven executive who drives organizational success through the collaborative teamwork of all departments and disciplines and attended over 130 conferences, and staged 11 conferences dedicated exclusively to the musculoskeletal healthcare sector. He was the first Wall Street orthopedic industry analyst and has authored nearly 7,000 pages of investment research on orthopedics. He was also the first Wall Street Orthopedic Focused Investment Banker and has executed more than 170 orthopedic deals and xx deals of every type as principal or agent, buyer or seller. Mr. Viscogliosi has founded more than 20 companies and serves or served as Chairman, CEO, President or Managing Member of 12 businesses and served on the board of more than 15 companies. Mr. Viscogliosi has been responsible for generating nearly $500 million in investment returns and has been involved in raising nearly $2 billion in capital for businesses participating in the orthopedic industry.
Dr.h.c. Anthony G. Viscogliosi, a founder, Chairman, Executive Chairman, President & CEO of Small Bone Innovations, Inc., where he currently serves as lead Board Member. In 2005, he directed a capital raise of $42.2 million for Small Bone Innovations, Inc. – the single largest round of venture capital financing in orthopedic history at that time. Small Bone Innovations, Inc. was recognized by Red Herring Magazine as one of the Top 100 Companies in North America and one of the Global Top 100 Companies – the only orthopedic company in the Top 100. Mr. Viscogliosi co-founded Viscogliosi Bros., LLC, the leading merchant bank and venture capital firm focused on the musculoskeletal/orthopedics industry, in 1999. Along with his two brothers, John and Marc, Mr. Viscogliosi currently serves as one of the three Principals of Viscogliosi Bros., LLC. Mr. Viscogliosi is a founder of the leading multi product spine non-fusion private company, Paradigm Spine, LLC; a founder of the leading Spine Arthroplasty company, Spine Solutions, Inc., now Johnson and Johnson Depuy acquired by Synthese and; financial founder of the leading Nucleus Arthroplasty company RayMedica, Inc., now Centinel Spine, Inc.; founder of the leading reprocessor of single use disposable devices in the USA, Ascent Healthcare Solutions, Inc., acquired by Stryker Capital; board member of SpineNext in its sale to Abbott Laboratories; co-founder of a full service brokerage firm and investment bank, Viscogliosi & Company, Inc.; a co-founder of the leading orthopedic clinical, regulatory, IP and reimbursement consulting firm, Musculoskeletal Clinical & Regulatory Advisers, LLC; a founder of a start-up executive search business, Orthopedic Recruiters, LLC; and a founder and Partner in 6 orthopedic focused venture capital & private equity funds, as well as the only orthopedic focused hedge fund. In addition, he is a founder of the NYU-HJD Viscogliosi Bros. Spine Center.
Prior to co-founding Viscogliosi Bros., from 1984-1999 Mr. Viscogliosi served with several regional brokerage and investment banking firms, as a Senior Vice President and Director of Medical Technology, Co-Director of Research, Assistant Director of Research, Equity Research Analyst, Portfolio Manager and as a Risk Analyst.
Prior to co-founding Viscogliosi Brothers, Mr. Viscogliosi was employed for eleven years with several regional brokerage and investment banking firms as an institutional sell-side equity research analyst. Mr. Viscogliosi was a Senior Vice President and Director of Medical Technology at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., Inc., a St. Louis-based regional investment banking and brokerage firm. Mr. Viscogliosi was responsible for establishing its New York office, and its medical technology institutional sales and research presence. Prior to Stifel, Nicolaus, Mr. Viscogliosi was Director of Medical Technology, Co-Director of Research, and Assistant Director of Research, respectively, with Rodman & Renshaw, Inc., First Albany Corp., Commonwealth Associates, Martin Simpson & Co, Inc. and its successor firms and an Equity Research Analyst at Equitable Securities, Inc. and Roney & Company, Inc. Over the course of Mr. Viscogliosi’s career as a research analyst, he has followed general healthcare, environmental services and waste management, medical technology and musculoskeletal/ orthopedic companies. From 1984-1987, Mr. Viscogliosi was a Risk Analyst and Investment Portfolio Manager for Michigan National Corp. Mr. Viscogliosi received his B.S. in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1984.
Mr. Viscogliosi attended the Henry Ford Community College in 1980, Lawrence Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with a B.A. in Economics in 1984. He is a graduate of the U.S. NAVY Supply Corps School, Athens, Georgia in 1992 and was a recipient of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2007.
Mr. Viscogliosi was direct-commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1990 during Operation Desert Shield, and retired as a Lieutenant Commander United States Navy Reserve. He served on-board the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 during the beginning of the NATO/Bosnia war in 1995, and has served in the Middle East on annual training assignments conducting activities in Jordan and Bahrain. He has served on several annual training assignments in Korea including during the beginning of the Iraq war in 2003. He also served as Assistant Officer-In-Charge and Supply Corp Officer for the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard in 2000/2001, which serves the President, Vice President, Secretary of Defense, Secretary of the Navy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff during Active Duty for Special Work. Mr. Viscogliosi earned the Designation and Warfare Qualification of Naval Aviation Supply Corp Officer in 1998, one of very few in the U.S. Armed Forces Reserves to earn such a designation. He was awarded with the US Navy Commendation Medal for his actions on 9/11 in New York City, at the World Trade Center.
Mr. Viscogliosi is involved in numerous academic, charitable and philanthropic activities as well. He formerly served as a board member for the Hospital for Joint Diseases and is currently a member of the New York University-HJD Advisory Board. He also has served on the Editorial Council for MX Magazine; Vice-Chairman on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of New York; Co-Chairman of the Junior Achievement Endowment Campaign; Co-Chairman of The Chancellor’s Campaign Council at the University of Michigan – Dearborn raising over $40 million; Member of The University of Michigan Tri-State Gifts Committee and Henry Ford Estate Advisory Board; Founder and Sponsor of The University of Michigan – Dearborn Viscogliosi Leadership Seminar Series. He is a member of The Woodrow Wilson Council since 2004. Mr. Viscogliosi is the founder of ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association) Erica Nader Award, annually recognizing the scientist who most advanced the science of spinal cord injury recovery. He is Co-Chairman for the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation annual Dream & Promise Awards Benefit – 2008 – 2013.
