Dr.h.c. Anthony G. Viscogliosi, Principal, Executive Chairman

Anthony G. Viscogliosi is an accomplished chief executive, entrepreneur, and business strategist with a proven track record for leading businesses across all phases of development -- from startup through commercialization to business expansion.

He founded 20 companies and funds in the musculoskeletal orthopedic industry and serves or served as chairman, CEO, or managing member of nearly 15 businesses. Mr. Viscogliosi has generated nearly $1.8 billion in investment capital returned to investors and has raised nearly $2.0 billion in capital for businesses in the orthopedic industry.

He identifies companies with innovative technologies and takes them from vision to growing businesses. He is recognized for his ability to create, invigorate and launch businesses on a solid growth trajectory by assembling management teams, setting strategic priorities and implementing innovations that translate to tangible results.

Mr. Viscogliosi co-founded Viscogliosi Brothers, LLC (VB) along with his two brothers, John and Marc. Today VB is a family office that is the leading merchant bank and venture capital firm focused on the musculoskeletal/orthopedics industry.

Most recently he was founder, chairman and CEO of Small Bone Innovations, Inc., the largest privately held designer, developer, manufacturer and marketer of joint replacement solutions for small bones and joints.  Small Bone Innovations, Inc. was recognized by Red Herring Magazine as one of the Top 100 Companies in North America. It was sold to Stryker Corporation in August 2014.

Mr. Viscogliosi worked at several regional brokerage and investment banking firms as an institutional equity research analyst for more than a decade.

He was among the first Wall Street orthopedic industry analysts and authored well over 7,000 pages of investment research for more than 1,000 research reports. He was also the first Wall Street orthopedic investment banker, executing more than 170 orthopedic deals.

Mr. Viscogliosi was senior vice president and director of Medical Technology at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., Inc., a St. Louis-based regional investment banking and brokerage firm. He was responsible for establishing its New York office, and its medical technology institutional sales and research presence.

Prior to Stifel, Nicolaus, he was director of Medical Technology, co-director of research, and assistant director of research, respectively, with Rodman & Renshaw, Inc., First Albany Corp., Commonwealth Associates, Martin Simpson & Co., Inc.

Mr. Viscogliosi earned a B.A. in Economics from the University of Michigan - Dearborn Campus, and earned an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine.

He is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Supply School, and attended the National Defense University, Joint Forces Staff College. He attended the Lawrence Technological University, School of Architecture, and Henry Ford Community College.

He was direct-commissioned as a U.S. Navy Reserve Officer in 1990 and awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for his actions during 9/11 in New York City. He served on-board the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt during the NATO/Bosnia war in 1995. He earned the designation as Naval Aviation Supply Officer and served 20-years in the Navy Reserve achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Mr. Viscogliosi’s philanthropy is focused on serving the needs of children’s education, healthcare and entrepreneurship. He also supports veteran’s affairs, creativity through the arts, local community development and the Catholic Church.

Mr. Viscogliosi has served on the board of more than 15 companies and is involved in numerous academic, charitable and philanthropic activities.

He was a board member for the Hospital for Joint Diseases and is currently a member of the New York University-HJD Advisory Board.  He served on the editorial council for MX Magazine; vice-chairman for Junior Achievement of New York; co-chairman of the Junior Achievement Endowment Campaign; co-chairman of The Chancellor’s Campaign Council at the University of Michigan; Member of The University of Michigan Tri-State Gifts Committee and Henry Ford Estate Advisory Board; founder and sponsor of The University of Michigan – Dearborn Viscogliosi Leadership Seminar Series.

He has been a member of The Woodrow Wilson Council since 2004 and is the founder of ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association) Erica Nader Award, which annually recognizes a scientist in spinal cord injury recovery.

Mr. Viscogliosi along with his wife Paula, founded the Manchester Community College Viscogliosi Entrepreneurship Center which provides entrepreneurs and small business owners with opportunities to explore and develop their passion and vision, and to create responsible leadership and viable businesses through innovative and informative educational and networking programs.
